New partnership announcement with Solvoz! IOM WASH (Within UN agency, International Office of Migration and their Department of Operations and Emergency, Water and Sanitation section) and Innovation Norway (as a donor) just announced our new partnership and collaboration for e-waste solutions at the first Africa Sustainable E-Waste Conference and Expo (taking place 11-13 August 2021) organized by WEEE Centre and Close the Gap Kenya.
The E-waste Project: Greening humanitarian response through recovery, repair and recycling of solar products in camps
Today at the conference, IOM presented our partnership in the “The E-waste Project – Greening humanitarian response through recovery, repair and recycling of solar products in camps”.
The aim of the partnership is to respond to the problem of ill-managed disposal of solar products in displacement settings by finding a cost effective solution(s) for the repair, reuse and recycle of these products or components through a circular economy.
The partnership E-waste Project adopts a circular economy approach to tackle the issue of solar e-waste management in displacement camps. The project includes multiple activities undertaken by the three partners of IOM and Innovation Norway: BRIGHT Products, TotalEnergies and Solvoz, to holistically address the entire waste value-chain from manufacture and distribution, to repair, recovery, recycling and procurement.
Role of Solvoz in the E-Waste project
With Solvoz, the project promotes sustainable procurement through the development of sustainable procurement documentation for use by organizations in the humanitarian sector, and to contribute to open-access knowledge in the Solvoz online platform including a range of solar solutions from small to complex, from both local and international suppliers.
On a broader scale, the project will thereby promote knowledge transfer and information sharing within the humanitarian, private, academia and NGO sectors. Evidence generated from the Project in the open access catalog will allow solar manufacturers to modify future designs to extend their durability, allow assessment of the Project’s replicability and scalability in other humanitarian contexts, and provide evidence to influence humanitarian procurement policies.
The 1st Africa Sustainable E-Waste Conference And Expo
With E-Waste stream being the fastest growing waste stream globally, the main objective of the 3-day conference is to create awareness on e-waste, show the opportunities and build strategic partnerships to drive Africa into a circular economy through safe e-waste management.
The first day of the conference focuses on legal, policy and regulatory frameworks, E-waste standards and practices. The second day on E-waste management practices (collection and recycling), incl Training and Awareness Creation. The final day on Circular Economy and Resource Recovery.
